GET OUT OF THAT LIFESTYLE RUT AND PUT YOURSELF ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

THE CHALLENGES THAT CURRENTLY FACE OUR ECONOMY HAVE LED TO MANY CHANGES FOR EMPLOYEES, IN TERMS OF JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND PRACTICES.

Salesmen and women, in particular, have had to be more proactive in attempting to hit their targets. Life on the road as a sales representative is becoming more common as they attempt to meet prospective clients at their premises, build rapport and hopefully close the sale.

The chances of making the deal happen will be dependent on a number of factors, not only the quality and delivery of the presentation, but also their energy and vitality levels.
I have talked to a number of new clients recently whose occupations are as sales representatives. During our consultation, they share the challenges that are preventing them from achieving their fitness and work goals.

TARGETS

During our consultation, I become aware that sales guys and girls are under extreme pressure to achieve their targets and that their presentations can be a source of much anxiety.

While pitching to prospective clients, any insecurities they have will affect their performance, as a closed jacket — to hide a bulging belly — leads to an increased stress response of sweat, forgetfulness and a first impression that was best forgotten.

Needless to say, failure to seal the deal and an impending staff meeting where successes and failures are shared with colleagues raises the stress hormone cortisol even further. When there is stress, there is normally a reduction in the happy neurotransmitter called serotonin, which can then lead to comfort eating of sugary foods.

During stressful times, our bodies often crave carbohydrates. This is because stress causes our bodies to break down serotonin, which helps to regulate sleep, reduce pain and appetite, and calm nerves.

Eating foods high in carbohydrates triggers the body to release insulin, which then allows the brain to produce serotonin.

PERFORM

If your role as a representative of your company is in sales and you perform presentations for clients, it is your responsibility to be in peak condition.

You are essentially a performer, no different to someone like Robbie Williams, as your peers are not only listening to the information that you have got to offer but their piercing eyes are judging you, your energy and your appearance.

Robbie has revealed that he won’t be touring again soon due to his crippling stage fright. “I get tremendous stage fright that’s getting in the way of me enjoying it. I want to find a way around it,” he said.

He is on a promotional frenzy ahead of the release of his new album, Reality Killed the Video Star, and he has even been dieting ahead of his return to the public eye. “I’ve been a food ninja for the last few months.

“I can’t stand training but I’ve got an album coming out and I don’t want to look like an idiot.”

He is not alone. As each pop star considers their comeback, their physical fitness and appearance will take priority before they dare announce performance dates.

So if sales is your thing, you need to get organised and learn to prepare fresh, healthy nutritious meals.
This will mean that you will have to bring a lunch box with you on your travels, as it is the nature of sales to be travelling from meeting to meeting and to be using garages as your source of foods.

To achieve success on stage or in a boardroom, you need to put your body in prime condition for the ultimate performance.

When you eat right you can’t go wrong and if initially, like Robbie, you can’t face training, you may need to seek the guidance of a professional and the energy, self confidence and vitality you obtain from training will make it all worthwhile.

These simple acts of nutrition and exercise will help you deliver a performance that has your audience craving for an encore and it will leave you with your bank balance bulging — not your waistline.
