DUBLIN WEIGHT LOSS: OPTIMISM IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS
It is often said weight loss is 80pc nutrition and 20pc exercise but sometimes I think it’s 110pc mental. In nutrition, it is often more dangerous for you to diet and fall off the wagon than to not diet at all.
This is because not only are you losing your fat-burning lipolytic cells and gaining more fat cells when dieting, but dieting also impacts negatively on your emotional and mental states.
When your head is not in the game and focused on something positive, your body will suffer as well. It could lead you down a road of self-destructive behaviour that will be harder to recover from.
You need to be aware of what’s happening in your lifestyle in your quest to be lean and healthy and to ensure you don’t fall off and get run over by the diet bandwagon again.
QUICK FIXES
Many people suffer from the quick-fix disease and believe all the advertising. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Ads are created by people who specialise in getting you to part with your money. If you stopped buying these gimmicks, there would not be a market to support all the new fad diet books or promote quick weight-loss supplements. If you want all the quick-fix salespeople to go away, then you need to stop buying their products.
Diets will work for a short period of time for weight loss in Dublin but they are not sustainable. Research shows the weight lost is often fat-burning muscle so your metabolism, and the ability to burn calories, is slowed down even further.
Your training and nutrition can be made simple. It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to have the right workout done at the right intensity, with full-body compound exercises.
More is not always better, and always trying to be perfect is usually the reason people abandon their weight-loss efforts after a minor setback, which will happen in life.
Don’t beat yourself up if you are not 100pc all the time — do your best daily and then repeat every day.
When you include a cheat meal as part of your nutrition program you will no longer feel deprived. There are some foods you will probably never give up and by feeling deprived, your chances of compliance will diminish and you will become guilty of binging.
SERIOUSNESS
If you are training hard and eating well, a disciplined reward cheat meal will ensure your compliance and in fact help you get leaner long term.
Are you a person who feels the dangers are not real enough for you? You wouldn’t drink a bottle of bleach because you know it would kill you.
Each day you may be making choices that slowly lead you down a road of ill health and increase your chances of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancers.
Everyone knows we should eat healthier, yet if it is not an immediate danger no one really takes it seriously. Most doctors will tell you to eat better and exercise more, yet many patients will never turn that advice into action. When will you take things seriously? When your doctor says if you don’t lose 30lbs of fat you will be dead in a year?
It’s time to realise long-term diseases are something to worry about now, when they can be prevented. If you need a reality check, visit people who are dealing with diabetes, cancer and heart disease and this may improve your compliance in terms of food choices.
Many people use food or exercise to escape real issues in their lives. Food is a temporary escape, not a long-term solution for happiness. Opening up a tub of Ben & Jerry’s may make the pain of work issues, relationship problems, low self-esteem or self doubt go away for a while, but it will not solve the root cause.

ATTITUDE
There are others who work out in the gym for hours every day because they don’t want to go home to face the issues in their lives. Your fears will never go away until you face them.
Your goal in training should be to steer clear of quick fixes and focus on long-term solutions. You don’t have to be perfect to get good results, so don’t beat yourself up for eating things you shouldn’t. Just focus on today and what you need to do, don’t dwell on the past.
Keep the approach to nutrition and training simple. Don’t look at it as a complicated task that you will resent and give up. You can be happy right now and it begins in your head. It’s something you need to face head on, not avoid and cover up with foods, exercise or other distractions.
